Lap Band at Work

Once a prospective patient has been identified to be qualified for the lap band procedure, the surgery, which is performed under general anesthesia, will be conducted on an out-patient basis and the patient will likely be done in less than an hour. Some patients may require an overnight stay, but that is not always the case.

With the Lap Band Operation, the lap band surgeon forms a small pouch in the upper part of the stomach with a controlled and adjustable stoma. By doing this, the surgeon will limit the amount of food that a patient can consume over time.

The lap band device is placed through tiny incisions in the abdomen and is adjusted around the upper portion of the stomach. The resulting pouch (or the "new stomach") limits the functional capacity for the stomach.
